JOB SUMMARY:

The Youth Program Specialist is to assist in the spiritual and program development of the Hawaiian and Pacific Islands Division’s youth and young adult ministries at divisional and corps level. This position works under the supervision of the Divisional Youth

Leaders to develop and direct the summer camp ministry of The Salvation Army at Camp Homelani – and will also assist in the planning and implantation of various events and support of programs throughout the year. The Youth Program Specialist will work closely

with divisional staff to provide ministerial support at the divisional and corps level.

QUALIFICATIONS:

At least 21 years old with a valid Driver’s license

At least 5 years/seasons of experience in the Christian Camping Ministry

Must be a Christian in profession, confession, and demonstration

Experience in leading/supervising people and the ability to work well with camp staff, the public, and children that we serve.

General knowledge of Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher) ProPresenter, JotForm, G-Suite (Google Docs, Google Forms, Google Drive), One Drive

Must be a fast learner, able to keep pace with multiple priorities.

Knowledge of Salvation Army practices and organization is desirable.

Must be a self-starter, able to prioritize multiple tasks with minimal supervision.

Possess excellent communication skills in written and verbal forms.

Ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds.

Responsible, dependable, and honest

Must be available to work some weekends, live at camp for the summer, and travel for 1 or more days off island and to outer islands as needed.

Knowledge and experience in the implementation of ACA standards desired

A degree in a related field is desirable

Due to the essential spiritual development of youth programs and the spiritual leadership of these programs, strict confidentiality is required.

DUTIES:

SUMMER CAMP:

The Youth Specialist will provide oversight and implementation of the Summer Camp Program as the Summer Camp Director. The Youth Specialist will work closely with the Divisional Youth Leaders to plan and implement all aspects of the summer camp program including

hiring.

Provide direction and leadership to all camp programing; including but not limited to day-to-day operations, safety, Christian education, activities, devotions, meetings, evening programs, staff, and more.

Ensure that Camp Homelani provides a safe and nurturing environment for all campers and participants including children and vulnerable adults.

Provide leadership and direction to the content and presentation of summer staff orientation.

Make periodic cabin and program area inspections to check that health and safety procedures are in practice.

Supervise and enforce summer camp staff policies. This will include the need to provide disciplinary action to correct undesirable behaviors.

Proof read and complete or assist with revisions to the following documents –

Summer Camp Staff Manual

Staff applications and correspondence

Camper applications

Closely follow Federal, State, and local legislative issues that may affect children and/or camps ability to operate. Make recommendations to Divisional Youth Leaders for response and action.

Adheres to all Salvation Army, American Camping Association (ACA), and government guidelines and requirements.

Ensure that ACA accreditation is maintained in regard to the Summer Camp program and Divisional Events held at Camp Homelani. Be present on the day of the accreditation visit.

Respond to crisis situations in a calm and effective manner

Assist in any other duties as requested in order to maintain a consistently high level of efficiency in the operation of the camp.

YOUTH DEPARTMENT:

Assist in the planning and implementation of all events and programs youth department related and Divisionally as needed. As well as attend and be present at Events for the entirety of the event. This would mean staying overnight at all overnight events.

Including but not limited to; Young Adult Retreat, Youth Rallies, Micronesian Youth Retreat, Divisional Youth Retreat, Youth Leader Trainings, Summer Camp, Corps Cadet Retreat, Corps Cadet Days, Men’s Camp, ect.

For Events:

Help develop the theme and direction of events

Help develop promotional materials

Help set up and execute the events, over the course of the weekend.

Lead Workshops or activities where needed

Identify the needs of Corps Youth Programs within the Division and Disciple youth leaders as needed or requested.

Be able to give devotionals and/or preach when needed.

Help with Audio Visual (A/V) needs of the department

Be willing to attend and assist TERRITORIAL HEADQUARTERS with mainland events

Work with the Divisional Youth Leaders and the Divisional Music Director in the coordination of divisional music events.

Attend trainings as required, such as child safety training, Territorial Headquarters youth training program, etc.

Assist in the development of web-based programming, resources, and trainings for youth and youth leaders.

OTHER FUNCTIONS:

Assist in any other duties as requested in order to maintain a consistently high level of efficiency in the operation of the camp.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The position requires sitting; climbing and/or balancing; stooping, kneeling, bending, stretching, crouching and/or crawling; standing; walking; manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination; use of vision; driving a vehicle; pushing/pulling/lifting/carrying 25-50

pounds and occasionally more than 50 pounds; travelling by airplane. Ability to operate a desktop or laptop computer. Physical stamina to keep up with 7-16 year olds.
