CLASSIFICATION: Part Time, Hourly

POSITION SUMMARY: To provide an enjoyable and safe sporting experience for an assigned group of youth while they learn. The sports instructor will provide coaching that will lead to the formulation of character including moral values, pride of accomplishment, acceptable social behavior, self-discipline and self-confidence. The instructor will coach student-athletes in the fundamental skills, strategy and physical training necessary for them to realize a degree of individual and team success in a given sport.
The sports instructor will have a deep commitment to the mission of The Salvation Army, which will be evident in his or her professional life and the manner in which he or she represents The Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center in the community.
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
+ High School Diploma or GED
+ Will accept candidates who are Junior or Senior in High school or enrolled in College, and at least 18 years of age.
+ Experience in coaching sports (specifically soccer, volleyball, basketball, or T-Ball) at the elementary school level or higher.
+ Previous experience in working with youth.
+ Must maintain a professional attitude and approach to problem solving.
+ Must be able to communicate effectively with staff, members, clients, and customers.
+ Must possess the physical ability to lead and interact in group activities and perform related physical skills.
+ Will attend and complete at least 2 hours of Child Safety training as approved by The Salvation Army.
+ Must be able to work varied shifts, including weekends and holidays.
+ Must be able to work independently, with minimal supervision.
+ Must be able to lift and carry at least 40 pounds.
Any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities will be accepted.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
+ Responsible for the development, management, and successful coaching of the team, to include recruiting, equipment management, and time management
+ Responsible for successful coaching of the team, to include maximizing the team’s potential/abilities and retaining athletes.
+ Supervise and mentor coaching assistants as directed and approved by the Athletics Manager.
+ Assist in team fund-raising and booster events.
+ Assist in organizing activities, clinics, leagues and athletic specific programs for all ages.
+ Manage and operate within the budget parameters, without exception, and submit all receipts on time as directed by the Athletics Manager.
+ Establish and ensure a safe environment for student-athletes.
+ Maintain good customer service to the community; see that all staff, members, clients, and customers are given prompt and courteous service.
+ Ensure the physical, emotional, and social welfare of student-athletes, including issues related to gender, ethnic diversity, and sexual orientation.
+ Work with volunteers and co-workers on a professional level. Interface with peer, supervisors and people of various socio-economic backgrounds.
+ Maintain a safe working environment; report all harmful problems with facility to the proper supervisor, including but not limited to the Athletics Manager.
+ Observe all safety rules and regulations by observing participant activities and enforcing safety regulations for all Gymnasium, Gym Lanai area, Game room area and Recreation Field facilities.
+ Report any suspicion of child abuse to the appropriate supervisor, including but not limited to the Athletic Manager and Child Protective Services.
+ Maintain quality service by following organization standards.
+ Demonstrates positive attitude and actions through a display of courtesy, service, cooperation, hospitality, sensitivity and professionalism to internal and external clients.
+ Respond to and report all accidents and incidents to supervisor at time of occurrence and to the Athletic Manager.
+ Follow and ensure adherence to The Salvation Army Policies and Procedures.
+ Maintain the Code of Ethics policy, which has been established for the Kroc Center Hawaii.
+ Perform other duties as assigned

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The position requires sitting; climbing and/or balancing; stooping, kneeling, bending, stretching, crouching and/or crawling; standing; walking; manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination; use of vision; pushing/pulling/lifting/carrying 50-75 pounds and occasionally more than 75 pounds. This employee may also be required to work weekends and evenings.
COMMUNICATION DEMANDS:
The position requires talking to co-workers, clients, vendors; requires written communication to and from co-workers, clients, vendor; talking on the telephone; requires responding to written or verbal requests of co-workers, clients, and vendors; requires training/giving verbal and written instructions; requires receiving verbal and written instructions; requires writing/composing written language; requires reading; requires visiting/working at other worksites; requires communication via the latest technologies.
The position requires the ability to interact with co-workers and the public in a positive, professional manner in conformity with The Salvation Army Mission Statement. The position also requires the ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds and circumstances.
DESCRIPTION OF WORK ENVIRONMENT:
While performing the duties of this job, candidate may be regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts. The noise level in the environment is occasionally loud. Extended workdays are a frequent occurrence, as are weekends and holidays as needed to support the business.
Most work will be both indoors and outdoors at Kroc Center Hawaii.
EQUIPMENT NEEDS:
Gymnasium equipment, including, but not limited to, cleaning equipment and lifts, sports equipment, tip and roll bleachers.
CERTIFICATES & LICENSES
Current CPR and AED certificates may be acquired after employment.
The candidate chosen for this position must have a valid driver’s license and insured transportation.
On an annual basis, employees are required to participate in The Salvation Army’s Fleet Safety Program.
